How to Fix ScpToolkit Driver Installation Error (0x00000002 & Virtual Bus Bugs)

By ScpToolkit Team September 2026 8 min read

Installing ScpToolkit on modern versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11 is usually straightforward, but driver conflicts, permission restrictions, and Windows Core Isolation can sometimes trigger errors like Error 0x00000002, "Couldn't install Virtual Bus Driver", or frozen installer progress.

If your controller is not recognized or the driver installation fails halfway through, this troubleshooting guide walks you through every verified fix to get your system working smoothly.

1. What Causes ScpToolkit Driver Installation Failures?

ScpToolkit relies on low-level kernel driver interception using libusbK and the ScpVBus (Virtual Bus) driver. The most frequent triggers for failed installations include:

  • Lack of Administrator Privileges: The driver installer must register kernel-level filter drivers.
  • Missing Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX runtimes: The background background worker requires 32-bit and 64-bit VC++ packages.
  • Memory Integrity / Core Isolation enabled on Windows 11: Modern Windows security blocks older, uncertified legacy drivers.
  • Corrupted previous driver remnants: Conflicting MotioninJoy or Better DS3 filter drivers still residing in DriverStore.

Fix 1: Run as Administrator and Force Driver Overwrite

Never run the ScpToolkit Driver Installer directly by clicking standard desktop shortcuts if User Account Control (UAC) is restricted.

  1. Close all running ScpToolkit services and windows.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Nefarius Software Solutions\ScpToolkit\.
  3. Right-click on ScpDriverInstaller.exe and select Run as administrator.
  4. In the installer window, check Force Driver Installation in the top-left settings pane.
  5. Select your DualShock 3 and Bluetooth adapter, then click Install.

Fix 2: Fix Error 0x00000002 (System Cannot Find the File Specified)

Error 0x00000002 indicates that Windows Driver Package Installer (DIFxAPI) could not locate the INF or SYS binaries, or an existing corrupted driver key is preventing overwrite.

How to Fix Error 0x00000002:

  1. Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers.
  2. Search for ScpVBus.sys or ScpFilter.sys. If present, delete or rename them.
  3. Re-run the ScpToolkit v1.7.277 Setup installer and choose Repair.

Fix 3: Disable Windows 11 Core Isolation / Memory Integrity

On newer Windows 11 installations, Microsoft enables Memory Integrity (Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity - HVCI) by default. Because ScpToolkit was compiled before modern Windows 11 driver signatures existed, HVCI may silently discard the virtual bus driver.

  1. Press the Windows Key and search for Core Isolation.
  2. Toggle Memory Integrity to Off.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Re-run ScpDriverInstaller.exe as Administrator.

Fix 4: Perform a Complete Cleanup with ScpCleanWipe

If multiple install attempts have left your USB or Bluetooth stack unstable, attempting another install will likely fail. You must wipe the driver repository first.

ScpToolkit includes an automated cleaning utility named ScpCleanWipe.exe. For full instructions on safely wiping old drivers and recovering normal Bluetooth functionality, see our step-by-step tutorial: How to Cleanly Uninstall ScpToolkit & Remove Drivers.

Fix 5: Verify USB Cable and Hardware Port

DualShock 3 controllers require an active 4-pin data handshake. Many cheap aftermarket Mini-USB cables are "charging only" (they lack D+ and D- data pins).

  • If the four red LEDs on your controller blink continuously but the controller never solidifies on Player 1, swap your USB cable for a certified data cable.
  • Always connect directly to motherboard USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports on the back of your desktop, avoiding external unpowered USB hubs or keyboard passthrough ports.

Still Having Issues? Consider Modern DsHidMini

If your Windows 11 machine consistently refuses to accept ScpToolkit's virtual bus, switching to DsHidMini is the official recommendation by Nefarius. Read our in-depth comparison: ScpToolkit vs DsHidMini: Which Should You Choose?.
